Commonwealth Adjustment

on further contemplation, i've decided to rename the Charon class to mimic Canadian practice of tribal names for it's large destroyers. I've dredged up a fair amount of names, and the Charons will be christened as; Koori Goorie Murri Murrawarri (Fair warning for Hood- the RN doesn't appear to have an HMS Maori, and the RAN will be wanting that name for a future ship)

Still debating the best approach for the DD modernizations, but I'm leaning towards the more expensive option for the additional range they get, among other benefits. In the meantime, working on refit options for the Auckland class light cruisers. First is a barebones life extension with basic AA and electronics upgrades, second is a more elaborate reengining and replaces the main armament with Canadian automatic 7.5" twin mounts from the PEI Quoted Auckland, Australia Patrol Cruiser laid down 1...

Commonwealth Adjustment

Quoted from "Hood" I am loathe to retconn too many British equipment sales to Australia so I'm focusing on home-built items and keeping everything reasonably modest. My kneejerk reaction for a lot of this is "buy Canadian", which generally falls in line with my overall feeling that the Commonwealth should be pursuing commonality whenever feasible, but I also want to make sure I don't default to Canadian too much simply because of my own bias. Another thing to consider is both Canada and Oz had ...

I actually did consider that, and was thinking that the upper deckhouse in question was narrower than the deck section protruding aft from the hull break, which would be closer to the full width of the hull. I've got a couple of huge files with parts and inspiration drawn from a lot of people who've drawn in the same/similar style and scale, and I don't always remember where I pulled them from originally at this point. I try and do enough work to make things as much original work as anything els...

The RCN still exists

I don't think there's a way of indicating the type of stern overhang RN carriers had in springsharp. The length is determined entirely by ship's structure, whereas those overhangs are superstructure. Draught is an artifact of using the Tenacious as source material and forgetting to adjust, I'll fix that. Similarly, the 40% forecastle is the same percentages used for the Tenacious, which is odd, since both are supposed to be open-hangar designs.

Like I said, the island still needs work. I spent a surprising amount of time just getting the main hull and all those details arranged in a way I was mostly satisfied with, and wanted to take a break from it

Yeah, I think it's a goof on Foxy's part, but it's a long-standing and consistent one at this point. Despite all his graphics showing the more traditional midships hull break, all his destroyers are simmed the same way, and as I interpret it, that dictates the break is forward of the main gun. His graphics also had late 30s-40s RN DD superstructures on everything, which i revised to more closely match historical late 20s designs. This seemed the most elegant solution, and it'll give the RAN dest...

First pass on HMCS Invidious Island still needs some work to make it less Yorktown-y, despite my attachment to it.

1940s IJN designs

Quoted from "Rooijen10" Not sure if there is any for a helicopter carrier at this point of time, whether it has 14" guns or not. I had been thinking with the coming of the jet age, the small carriers would become useless and probably should start using helicopters instead... but then, what was around back then that would be useful to be used on such small carriers? So I have not made that step either. To be fair, the RCN has been extremely forward-thinking when it comes to shipborne helicopter ...

1940s IJN designs

As one of the most guilty players for driving ships long past their practical lifetimes, I'd have to say it doesn't seem like a wise investment to modernize a pair of 1914 ships at this juncture.

With an annual output of 40000tons, the difference between 240t and 400t per refit (Or 1200 vs 2000 for each class) isn't a drastic concern, and I'd lean towards the more capable refits by a strictly game mechanics evaluation. Likewise, by game mechanics, either refit gives the life extention refurbishment that should last another 15 years. I ginned up a report for a 1933 update for the Dauntless and Firefly classes, based on the above - Same light tonnage cost, main adjustment is additional bun...

Commonwealth Adjustment

As I said, unless I can fathom some reason for Oz and NZ to disagree on some tangent of international relations, it's not a separation I expect to delve too deeply into, or factor into anything of relevance beyond Commonwealth minutia. The main effect I see is that It may come up in Hood's news reports when it comes to the nuts and bolts of commonwealth internals, and don't be surprised if you see HMNZS instead of HMAS.

I didn't quite mean to open such a large can-of-worms with the New Zealand comment. Game mechanic-wise, they're clearly intended to be one entity, and Foxy did nothing to really portray NZ as anything other than part of Oz. My view is that NZ is a separate dominion for political and home-rule purposes, but clearly at some point in the 20s, rather than developing separate navies, they have a combined service, and I intend to continue operating them as such for the most part. I would also say it's...

Yeah, that's a common goof I make. Adjusted both sims to 57mm Automatics, the cheap one loses 5t misc weight, no other effects for the latter design. New construction is the ultimate solution, but even a crash program will take time to create the amount of destroyers I feel Oz needs, so no matter what, they're expected to be on the rolls for another 10-15 years.

First project, which had mention in Foxy's last report but lacked a detailed report, a modernization of the Alacrity class destroyers. First proposal is a moderate level 3 overhaul (15%/240t) to include upgrading the weapons and electronics suites, second is more comprehensive including a new power plant (25%/400t) The subsequent Dauntless and Firefly classes would get similar if not identical refits, since despite build dates of 1933 and 1935, I can find no separate sim report for them, and ass...

To be fair, your Vengeance is pretty long-in-tooth by now.... I'm mostly done making sense of where Oz was at the start of 1945. The biggest discrepancy I have at the moment is his OOB listing two seaplane subs that I can't find any stats for, or any record of them being built. Unless someone knows something I haven't been able to find, I'm going to assume they don't exist. Here's what I have for a current OOB- Quoted Royal Australian Navy Order of Battle as of January 1945 [SIZE=3]RAN Home Flee...

my concern was mostly that the first 3 links I dug up for it were dead, and it'd be nice to have it more easily accessible; trying to get a better feel for what Oz's territory encompasses and all that. Photobucket and Imageshack's decline have gutted a lot of old posts, unfortunately. iirc, a cia.gov map was used as the base source for the WW map originally.
