to day the navy department has announced two 22,000 repalcment cairres for HMAS Horbat each cairre are to be built in the comeing year and will have a wing of 70 aircaft on bored the minister for the mr John black could not be reacht for coment at this time the class cairrers will be named
HMAS Maxwell and Steelwell.

Hmmm...

Very suspicious looking ship if you ask me since you only need 4900 tons for the 70 planes (I assumed that the given number of 70 planes is the maximum it can carry despite the fact that it has enough space for 93 planes and enough miscellaneous load for 83 planes) leaving you with 2100 tons misc load. I tried to sim it but it is pretty hard to get the right data for it.
I have a weird idea what I would do with a ship like this so I like it a lot except for the rather low BC of 0.380 which seems a bit ridiculous for a ship that size so I think it is advisable to adjust that a bit. Armor is very low, but with that weird idea I have in my mind, I doubt a lot of armor is necessary (preferably no belt armor at all).

By my reckoning 7,000t should be enough for an airgroup of 72 planes like with Francesco Morosini . This is by having (72*72) for flight deck and fuel +(72*250 for the weight of planes.

How much misc. weight byt your method Walter would you need for an airgroup of 48 and 64 aircraft?

From the springstyle notes:

Quoted

1) Take the square root of miscellaneous weight; e.g., if
miscellaneous weight is 10,000 tons, the weight-based limit
for your carrier is 100 aircraft. (In addition, allow at
least 25 tons per aircraft, i.e., if miscellaneous weight
is just 100 tons, your ship can carry 4 planes, not 10.)


The way I read that is that the minimum weight needed for 1 plane (and all the extras) has to be 25 tons, no less. When looking at the example in the springstyle notes, 10,000 tons will give you 100 aircraft meaning 100 tons per plane (and all the extras).

... meaning that you would need 2304 tons for 48 planes and 4096 tons for 64 planes. That is the way I read it and that is the way I always have applied it.

Why?
If misc weight is 100 tons it'll give you 4 planes (4 x 25). It does not say 116 tons ( = (4x25) + (4x4))

Am I right or am I reading it wrong?

I agree with Walter...

For 70 planes you´ll need 4900ts. This includes all ammo, fuel, spareparts, tool shops etc. necessary to operate all those planes. You can, of course, add additional misc weight for staff facilities or extended (mission) range.
