Ocean University of China

The Ocean University of China colloquially known as Haida is a university in Qingdao and is especially renowned for its marine sciences and fishery sciences departments. It is considered as one of China's elite universities and reports directly to the chinese government.

The university was set up in 1924 as the "Private Qingdao University". This new higher learning institute was located nearly at the middle of Qingdao and was mostly financed by wealthy donors. In 1930 it became part of the Shandong University and was renamed as "Qingdao division of Shandong University". At this time it included two colleges, one for literature and one for science. The following years, programs were expanded, and in 1936 the number of students had reached 411. Within the next years the number of studends grew to five, and by 1945 the number of students had reached 2123. In 1946 with the new president Prof. Yu Zhigang, the university get it's new name "Ocean University of China ". The university operates all research ships of the chinese navy.

The main campus of Haida is called Yushan and situated on a hill with a view of the sea in the old part of Shinan District. Featuring German-style architecture built in the early 1920s, it is especially renowned for its beauty.
